September 2010 - "I've been waiting for this moment for my whole career", says former Infinitas Learning CEO and maths teacher Fred Grainger, "Here at Meteor we want to grab this opportunity with both hands and use it to democratise learning - to open up the private tutoring market and make it accessible to anyone".
Fred's vision - of a global online academy - has been the inspiration for the team at Meteor Online Learning since 2008, when work first started on developing a new way of bringing academic textbooks to the digital market. Put simply, Fred wanted to shape the future of how students learn. So, next year Meteor Online Learning will be launching the beta version of the Meteor Academy, our online tutoring and revision school with global ambitions.
"Traditionally, the home tutoring market has focused on one-to-one tuition or on the mass production of workbooks for self-directed study", explains Sam Bensted, Head of the Meteor Academy, "but recent research suggests that students gain significant benefits from studying in small groups. That's why Meteor tutorials are designed to be flexible, allowing tutors to teach up to ten students at a time, or to set supervised tasks for smaller groups in break-out rooms and still give students one-to-one attention when they need it. This means students are supported every step of the way, giving them the best chance of success".
The Meteor Academy brings together the academic excellence of traditional educational publishers, a library of interactive multi-modal resources and a virtual classroom designed to support effective, collaborative small group sessions. Courses start with Maths GCSE revision in January 2011, ready for students taking Maths GCSE at Foundation or Higher level with March or June modules.
